As one of eleven European Rail Freight Corridors, the RFC Rhine-Alpine increases the attractiveness and efficiency of international rail freight traffic in order to foster competitiveness and to promote a modal shift from road to rail in the European freight transport market. RFC Rhine-Alpine links the countries Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. It has a total of 3,900 km of corridor lines, is connected to 6 seaports and is used by over 100,000 freight trains annually.
